Exercise during pregnancy and postpartum has become a specialized field requiring scientific knowledge and practical coaching skills. This certification prepares fitness professionals to confidently work with pregnant and postpartum clients while maintaining the highest standards of safety and professionalism.

Throughout the course you will learn how to understand the physiological and anatomical changes that occur during pregnancy and recovery, perform appropriate client screening, assess movement quality, prescribe safe exercise, and modify training according to each client's stage, needs and goals.

1. Do I need previous qualifications?

1. EQF Level 3 Fitness Instructor or Group Fitness Instructor or equivalent accredited
certification. Those wishing to deliver group exercise for pregnant and postpartum
clients, must hold the appropriate discipline

2. EQF Level 4 Personal Trainer qualification or equivalent accredited certification is
required as a prerequisite if the exercise professional wants to deliver personal
training sessions with pregnant and postpartum clients.

3. EQF Level 5 Exercise Specialist qualification or equivalent accredited certification is
required as a minimum prerequisite if the exercise professional wants to deliver
exercise programs tailored for a complicated course of pregnancy or postpartum
(e.g., for clients with gestational diabetes, hypertension, overweight).

4. EQF Level 6 Graduated Exercise Professional qualification or equivalent accredited
certification is required as a minimum prerequisite if the exercise professional wants
to deliver extensive fitness assessments related to exercise sessions with pregnant
and postpartum clients.

5. If aquatic activities are planned, the adequate qualifications for conducting exercise
in water are required.
6. Working experience as an exercise professional is recommended as a prerequisite
for the ‘Exercise in Pregnancy and Postpartum’ LLL Certificate

The program is delivered through in-person practical sessions combined with blended learning.

Assessment includes a theoretical exam, written case study, practical observation and competency evaluation.

4.What is the scope of practice?

Graduates can safely coach healthy pregnant and postpartum clients but are not qualified to diagnose or treat medical conditions. Clients requiring medical intervention should always be referred to the appropriate healthcare professional.

Learn the scientific foundations of exercise during pregnancy, including its benefits for both mother and baby, current international guidelines, and the evidence supporting safe physical activity throughout pregnancy.

Unit 2 : Health Issues & Safety During Pregnancy

Understand the key safety considerations for prenatal exercise, including absolute and relative contraindications, warning signs to stop exercise, and best practices for creating a safe training environment.

Unit 3 : Health Screening & Fitness Assessment

Develop the skills to conduct pre-exercise screening, evaluate medical history and readiness for physical activity, and perform appropriate fitness assessments using pregnancy-specific screening tools.

Unit 4 :Exercise Prescription, Implementation & Adaptation

Learn how to design, deliver, progress, and modify exercise programs throughout each trimester while adapting to individual needs, symptoms, and physiological changes.

Unit 5 :Promotion of Physical Activity During Pregnancy

Unit 9 :Exercise Prescription, Implementation & Adaptation

Design progressive postpartum exercise programs that restore core strength, improve functional movement, support recovery, and safely guide clients back to regular physical activity.
